Pine trees, hardwood forests, rushing
mountain streams and panoramic views of the fall colors. Warm, sunny days and
crisp cool nights in warm and cozy wilderness lodges. It is fall hiking at its
best
The trip features seven day hikes in the
high country of West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The hikes
take place in Dolly Sods, Cranberry Glades and Monongahela National Forest.
This trip is timed for peak fall foliage. We will hike along ridge top trails
to mountain peaks for 360 degree panoramic view of fall colors. Our hike will
parallel the highest flowing stream on the East coast, with red spruce,
cranberry glades, and high mountain meadows.
Dolly Sods is an area of high elevation
wind-swept plains on the Allegheny Plateau, with deep sided canyons. At
elevations of 2,600 to over 4,000 feet, the area has extensive flat rocky
plains, upland bogs, beaver ponds, and sweeping vistas. The plant life and
climate on this high plateau resembles northern Canada, and many species found
here are near their southernmost range.
Cranberry Wilderness is the largest (35,864
acres) USFS Wilderness east of the Mississippi. Two scenic rivers pass through
the area - the Williams River (and more specifically, the middle fork of the
Williams River which originates in the Wilderness) and the Cranberry. One of
the most unusual features in the region is the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area,
a 750 acre bog located at the southern tip of the Wilderness - the largest in
West Virginia.
This is a day-hiking trip with moderate
hikes ranging from 7-11 miles. We end the trip with a canoe ride on the
Potomac. Individuals can opt to take the day off and explore on their own. This
trip is for people in good physical condition who enjoy hiking and sightseeing
during the day and want to want to spend nights with creature comforts of a
shower, good meal and comfortable bed.
