Bahamas Sea
Kayak Trip
Escape the winter and enjoy the
crystal clear waters of Exuma Islands! February 23rd- March 1st
Bahamas Sailing
Expedition
The Exuma Cays (Islands) stretch from about 35 miles
Southeast of Nassau, Bahamas for over 100 miles, in a long chain that
encompasses 365 tropical islands, one for each day of the year! Manned space
craft from Cape Kennedy regularly follow the chain on takeoff, eliciting the
following description from one astronaut. "They appear below me, like a Golden
Chain on an Emerald sea". These Out - Islands (Bahamians like to call The
Family Islands) are a much appreciated relief from the glitz, glamour, and
business of Nasau and Grand Bahama. Here the natural element is the attraction-
the remoteness and beauty of the hundreds of perfect beaches, the abundant
marine life, and the clarity of the turquoise waters. This is ANOTHER WORLD in
itself. The people are ever so friendly and helpful: the atmosphere laid back
and casual, the surroundings breathtaking!

EXUMA CAYS MAP
Sea Kayaking the Barre Terre
Area

Looking at the map NW to SE the red stars indicate the
following cays: Pigeon Cay, Rat Cay, Boysie Cay, Square Rock Cay and Levi Cay.
All of these cays are available for camping. The navy/black star marks Barre
Terre Settlement, one of our launch areas. A second launch area located to the
SE of Barre Terre is Cocoa Plum. Cocoa Plum Beach is also a great camping
location and can be used as a first campsite in case of inclement weather.

Sea Kayaking FAQ's
What skill level is required for the
Starfish trips? Skill levels will range from the beginner to the
advanced paddler. Beginners will be taught the skills necessary to enjoy the
trips and the advanced paddler can be challenged by the much more challenging
island cuts that provide opportunities to hone in on your surfing skills. Our
instructors are also able to teach rolling skills to those wanting to give it a
try.
How far do we travel each day?
Starfish trips typically travel between 3-5 miles per day. This gives everyone
the opportunity to enjoy the many other things to do in the Exumas such as
hiking, snorkeling, spear fishing, reading a good book or just relaxing on the
beach. Experienced paddlers are invited to venture out on their own if they
want more paddling distance.
Will we be kayaking in the
ocean? Most of the kayaking is in the protection of the harbor. On
occasion, if the weather is great, we may venture out into the ocean. There are
some cuts between the islands that can have ocean swells and currents.
What are the age limits of your
trips? We recommend that children be at least 8-13 years of age
accompanied by an adult in a double kayak. We do have a couple of small single
expedition sea kayaks that would be appropriate for smaller kids ages 14 and
up.
How much water should we carry with
us? We recommend 1 gallon per person per day. Water cannot be gotten
out on the course so all water must be carried for the entire trip time.
