What better way to experience
spring than walking in fields of wildflowers?
In April, we hike through vineyards of Tarara Winery and along the Potomac, a
plant migration route near Lucketts, Virginia. John DeMary, naturalist and
wildflower expert, guides you as he identifies and teaches you to identify
early spring flora and fauna along the riverbank and trails. You will finish back at the winery, with a wine tasting on Tarara's Lakeside Lawn scenic picnic area. Hikers will receive a background on the wines and the winemaking process.
In May or June, we walk through a forest of
wildflowers on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains 16 miles west of
Middleburg, VA in the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. The location of our
trail head 2,000 feet above sea level allows for an exciting floral diversity
of Showy Orchis, Trillium, Lady Slippers and other spring wildflowers late into
June. The hike ends in style with refreshments at Naked Mountain Winery. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in the classic wine tasting at the winery, featuring wines such as their signature Chardonnay, Make Me Blush Rose, and a variety of other reds. Naked Mountain wines were served at the White House during
the George H.W. Bush Administration and the Clinton Administration.
Participants will receive a wildflower identification
checklist and information about historical medicinal use of plants. Birds and
other wildlife will also be identified on the tours. The level of difficulty is
non strenuous to moderate, and beginners are welcome.
