kayak
Let our dedicated and enthusiastic instructors infect you with the
paddling bug!
Our kayaking lessons are held on the nearby
Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers near Harpers Ferry, two rivers perfectly suited
for learning to kayak, and only one hour from Washington DC! By taking our
weekend kayak lesson, you will be able to build on your skills from one day to
the next, as well as have time Sunday morning to explore the scenic Harpers
Ferry village and area. Each class is led by a certified ACA (instructor
emphasizing safety and fun! If necessary, participants may split the weekend
lesson into two separate weekends.
Beginner Kayak Lessons: Scenic Saturday
On this lesson, you will be introduced to
the basics of recreational river kayaking. During a brief dry land session, you
will learn and have the opportunity to ask questions about kayaking gear,
clothing, equipment, river safety and hazard detection. Then, its time to hit
the water! You will use a stable, recreational kayak to maneuver your way down
a scenic 4.5 mile stretch of the Potomac River, awed by the natural beauty of
Short Mountain and the great blue herons and bald eagles you may see. Paddling
through mellow water and over the riffles and ledges of Class II rapids, you
will learn basic paddling strokes, wet exits, self rescue, water reading
technique, river safety, and analyzing rapids. No prior experience
required.
Intermediate Kayak Lesson: Adventure Sunday
This class is designed for individuals who have completed a
beginner level kayak class. The fun simply does not end on this Class I-III
whitewater run down the Potomac River Gap at Harpers Ferry. Paddling down the
ledges and waves of this breath-taking section of river, you are surrounded by
national parks on both sides. Using a sit-on-top kayak, you will comfortably
learn how to maneuver in whitewater, and if you flip over, it's easy to climb
right back on! You will have opportunities to practice skills you learned the
day before, as well as sharpen your river reading and running techniques. In
addition, you will be introduced to river rescue protocol, and see an
introduction to the eskimo roll. Whitewater kayaks may be requested by those
with prior whitewater experience.
"Just wanted to thank you for a wonderful kayak
experience. We were very impressed by your kindness and professional--you and
your operation do an outstanding job. Thanks again and keep up the good
work!" Peace, Love, and Positivity, Dave and Maggie |
