Canoeing and Kayaking trips on the Potomac just down river from Harpers Ferry are a perfect getaway only one hour from DC and Baltimore beltways. Launch from Brunswick Campground and paddle a mellow and beautiful stretch of our Nation’s River while you leave your daily cares behind!

This stretch of the Potomac River is perfect for floating, picnicking, fishing, and bird watching. Highlights include the Catoctin Creek Aqueduct, the most picturesque aqua duct on the C&O Canal and fantastic bird life. Keep your eyes open for great blue herons and the return of the bald eagle! All ages will enjoy staying cool on this Potomac River paddling trip.

    River & Trail recommends that people participating in canoe and kayak rentals have prior knowledge of how to canoe or kayak at the level of difficulty of the route they choose.

  • Brunswick Campground Check-in is located approx 15 minutes from Harpers Ferry, WV
    The closest mapable address is: 100 S. Maple Ave Brunswick, MD 21716. This address will take you to a railroad parking lot. Once you are at this MARC train station parking area, go over 2 sets of railroad tracks and down a mini-hill to the stop sign (t-intersection). Turn left onto the gravel road and continue about 3/4 mile(this is the C&O Canal). Campground is on the right.

    Hikers/Bikers on the C&O Canal towpath: The campground is located between mileposts 54 and 55.

    Directions from DC/Baltimore area to Brunswick Campground

    1. Take 270N to 70W, or 70W to Frederick.
    2. At Frederick, take exit #52 to 340 W.
    3. Go approximately 9 miles and take the “Petersville” 180 exit.
    4. Turn left onto 180 W(Jefferson Pike).
    5. Go 1.7 miles, turn left onto MD-79 W/Petersville Rd. Go approximately 2 miles to a stop light.
    6. Continue straight through the stop light to the bottom of the hill where you will enter a traffic circle.
    7. Take the 4th turnoff (sign says “to A street” and Marc Train).
    8. Bear right immediately onto Maple Ave to the stop light, go straight through.
    9. Once you are at the MARC train station parking area, go over 2 sets of railroad tracks and down a mini-hill to the stop sign (t-intersection).
    10. Turn left onto the gravel road and continue about 3/4 mile (this is the C&O Canal).
    11. Campground is on the right.

    Directions from Northern Virginia

    1. Take 7 West (or 267 W the Greenway toll road) to route 9 West.
    2. Go 5-6 miles and turn right onto VA-287 N/Berlin Turnpike
    3. Go 6.6 miles, turn left onto W. Broad Way.
    4. After 120 feet, turn right again onto VA-287 N/Berlin Turnpike.
    5. Go 2-3 miles, cross the Potomac River Bridge into Maryland.
    6. Enter the traffic circle and take the 2nd turnoff (sign says “to A street” and Marc Train).
    7. Bear right immediately onto Maple Ave to the stop light, go straight through.
    8. Once you are at the MARC train station parking area, go over 2 sets of railroad tracks and down a mini-hill to the stop sign (t-intersection).
    9. Turn left onto the gravel road and continue about 3/4 mile (this is the C&O Canal).
    10. Campground is on the right.

    Directions from Harpers Ferry area and River & Trail Outfitters

    1. Take 340 N/E for 4-5 miles from Harpers Ferry into Maryland.
    2. Take the 180 to 478 exit to Knoxville Brunswick.
    3. Go 1/2 mile and turn right onto MD-478 E/Knoxville Rd (not an intersection).
    4. Go 2.3 miles and turn right at the stop light onto S Maple Ave.
    5. Once you are at the MARC train station parking area, go over 2 sets of railroad tracks and down a mini-hill to the stop sign (t-intersection).
    6. Turn left onto the gravel road and continue about 3/4 mile (this is the C&O Canal).
    7. Campground is on the right
    Groups Arriving in Buses
    Please make prior arrangements with us for parking and turn around. DO NOT TURN AROUND IN ANY OF THE SMALL DRIVEWAYS OR MILLER AVENUE around River & Trail. This may cause an accident or a ditched bus!
